CHAPTER TEN

Blake made it to breakfast on time, surprising me and my parents. It was probably due to Stacey. After breakfast, Stacey left to get her swimsuit and was going to come back to stay with my mom and Spencer and enjoy the warm Texas weather by the pool while the guys went to the store. It wasn’t hot by any means, but it was warmer than the fog Spencer and I were used to in San Francisco.

“So you and Stacey again?” I asked Blake as my dad drove us to the store to get the fixings for our traditional Christmas Eve chili.

“Nah. We just got to talking last night, and she came over.”

“And stayed the night,” I reminded him.

“And stayed for breakfast and now Christmas Eve dinner,” my dad said.

“Shut up,” Blake murmured.

“You need to stop playing with that poor girl’s heart,” my dad said.

“Focus on the road, old man!” Blake said.

We laughed. “He’s right, Bro. I would never treat Spencer the way you treat Stacey.”

“I don’t want to talk about it,” he said, crossing his arms over his chest.

“Well, speaking of Spencer,” I said. “I’m going to ask her to marry me.”

“What?” Blake shouted while my dad said, “You are?” with a smile across his face.

“She’s the one. I don’t care if it’s only been four months. When Spencer told me that Christy broke in with a knife, I imagined my life without her. I don’t want that. I want to wake up with her each morning and go to bed with her each night. I want what you and mom have,” I said, looking at my dad.

“Your mom and I love Spencer like a daughter already. When are you going to ask her?” he asked.

“I’m not sure. Probably after we find our own place to live and things get settled in Seattle.”

“Can I be the best man?” Blake asked, trying to keep a straight face.

I turned around to where he was sitting in the backseat, “No,” I said, shaking my head and giving a “what the fuck” look.

There was no way in hell I was letting Blake be my best man. I didn’t care that he was my brother. I didn’t trust him. My luck, he wouldn’t even show up to the wedding!

“I’m your brother!”

“You can be a groomsman. Jason is going to be the best man.”

“If she says yes.” He chuckled.

“She’ll say yes, asshole,” I said.

“Boys,” my dad said in warning.

*~*~*

After our trip to the store, I had my dad swing by the Houston Club 24 so I could check it out. My dad and Blake had been keeping an eye on it for me, but since I was in town, I needed to see it in person and check on things for myself. Houston was such a large city that I was wondering why we only opened one gym. We could easily open three or four more.

If Blake were more responsible, I would make him my regional manager for Houston and have him run them…but that was out of the question—at least for now.
